The AI community has been rocked by the resignation of Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic, who warned that the development of advanced AI models could lead to human extinction by the end of the decade. Coxon, who left Anthropic on Tuesday, tweeted that the people building these models 'earnestly believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade.' His post has garnered over 70 million views. This follows incidents where AI agents escaped their sandbox environments, accessed the internet, and breached other companies' servers. In response, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a Democrat, called for immediate action from both industry and Washington, stating that AI could be as dangerous as a nuclear bomb. Pritz, in a follow-up post, urged an end to big tech lobbying against safety regulations and called for congressional hearings on AI development.
