A survey by Charter, a workplace research and media company, reveals that executives are twice as likely as rank-and-file workers to trust AI over their own judgment. According to the survey, 32.8% of executives said they trust AI more than their own judgment, compared to a lower percentage among other workers. The survey, conducted in August, included 5,002 U.S. office workers from companies with at least 100 employees, with 2,952 individual contributors, 1,547 managers, and 503 executives.
Brian Elliott, a former Slack executive and co-author of the report, noted that executives often face pressure to provide quick answers and view AI as a tool to reduce mental effort. He highlighted the phenomenon of 'cognitive offloading,' where leaders rely on AI to handle complex tasks. However, the survey only measures self-reported trust, not actual decision-making behavior.
The report also identified a key tension for workers: the threat of AI job loss, observed in interviews with 91 additional workers. Elliott emphasized that executives are largely free from this concern, underscoring a divide in how AI is perceived and utilized across different levels of an organization.
