LG electronics launches ai-centric turbine chiller with 30% energy savings

LG Electronics has unveiled a new oil-free variable-speed turbine chiller tailored for AI data centers, promising a 30% reduction in annual energy consumption. The device employs LG's proprietary magnetic levitation bearing technology, which suspends the rotor using electromagnetic forces, eliminating mechanical friction and the need for oil-based systems. This innovation enhances efficiency while avoiding the complications of oil contamination in heat exchangers. The chiller also integrates natural refrigerant pre-cooling technology, allowing it to operate without compressors during colder months. By halting the compressor—which accounts for over 80% of energy use—during winter, the system leverages ambient temperatures to circulate refrigerant and dissipate heat. This approach significantly improves energy efficiency and aligns with ESG standards through the use of R-513A refrigerant, which has a global warming potential 50% higher than R-134a. Additionally, the chiller features machine learning capabilities to predict and prevent equipment failures, and a rapid restart function that restores full cooling capacity within 180 seconds after power restoration.
