Major publishers sue Brave browser over alleged AI training and paywall circumvention
The New York Times, alongside several other media organizations, has initiated legal action against the developer of the Brave web browser. The lawsuits allege that the company engaged in the unauthorized scraping of copyrighted material to train artificial intelligence models and enabled users to bypass subscription paywalls.
The complaint, filed by entities including New York Daily News, the Chicago Tribune, and the Orlando Sentinel, claims that Brave Software has profited by monetizing its index of scraped websites. Specifically, the publishers assert that Brave provided AI companies with paid access to real-time online content sourced from the Brave Index, which the AI firms then utilized for model training and responding to user queries.
