Majority of americans call for caution in AI development

The survey, which ended on a Sunday, found that 39% of respondents believe AI is already having a negative impact, up from 36% in August and the highest since March. Only 11% view AI as beneficial, with the rest unsure or not responding. The poll also shows that 69% of Americans are paying attention to major AI companies' calls for slowing development and increasing regulation. About 55% of respondents support slowing AI development, while 13% oppose it. The survey highlights a growing demand for federal oversight in AI safety standards, despite limited legislative progress in Washington. Despite calls from figures like Senator Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon, and even former President Donald Trump’s support for rapid AI advancement, legislative action remains stalled. The Republican-controlled House is in recess until November, making swift action unlikely. The poll underscores a significant public demand for caution in AI development, with 73% emphasizing the importance of safe and responsible AI creation over maintaining global leadership in the field.
