Eric Kutcher, a senior partner and chair of McKinsey North America, emphasized that AI could be the key to alleviating the US debt burden. He stated that the technology has the potential to boost productivity and push US GDP growth closer to 4%, compared to the 2.2% annualized growth recorded in the second quarter. Kutcher, who expressed concerns about the nation's debt, which has surpassed $40 trillion, warned that without AI-driven productivity gains, there is no other viable solution to the problem. Investors' worries about rising debt have contributed to higher Treasury yields, increasing the cost of financing the debt. Kutcher also highlighted the challenges of expanding power supplies to support data centers, which could limit AI's potential by up to 25% to 30%. He reiterated McKinsey's plans to maintain a 12% growth in its consulting staff, with 85% to 90% of hires coming from campuses. Billionaire investor Ray Dalio, founder of Bridgewater Associates, recently warned of an impending debt crisis within the next three years, stating that the US is approaching its limits due to the debt's size and growth rate. Kutcher stressed that AI represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the consulting profession, which he believes this generation will lead through.
