Mckinsey warns 11 million U.S. workers may need to change careers due to AI

McKinsey released a report on September 29, 2026, highlighting the potential impact of AI on employment in the United States. The report estimates that by 2035, approximately 11 million workers may need to switch careers, representing about 7% of the current workforce. This number could triple from the current annual rate of 215,000 career changes. McKinsey notes that six out of seven workers will require extensive retraining and face reduced income. The report emphasizes that despite new job opportunities, mismatches in skills, qualifications, location, or salary could leave millions behind. The report identifies office administration, retail sales, and transportation and logistics as the most vulnerable sectors, with roles such as customer service representatives, cashiers, and warehouse workers at risk. Low-income workers are eight times more likely to be affected than high-income workers. While the report acknowledges uncertainties regarding AI adoption and labor market shifts, it expands the potential range of affected workers to between 6 million and 16 million. The findings underscore the need for proactive strategies to address the transition.
