Meta introduces adorable mascot to promote its AI agent
Meta has unveiled Jollybot, an adorable mascot for its new Muse AI agent, as part of its strategy to make agentic AI more approachable for consumers. The character, designed by Alex Cornell, Meta's Muse product design lead, was highlighted by chief AI officer Alexandr Wang during the Muse launch. Jollybot aims to counteract recent AI-doomer narratives by presenting the technology as a friendly, helpful companion rather than an existential threat. Wang emphasized the importance of a non-intimidating face for increasingly powerful AI, noting that the mascot can be customized to fit various user scenarios. Despite its appeal, the mascot poses a unique brand risk, as many top AI apps have opted for minimal logos instead of avatars. Wang also shared that he personally posted Muse launch content without a dedicated social team, expressing a preference for direct communication over corporate messaging.
The mascot's design emerged from an early challenge: how to visually represent an AI agent's operations to users. This approach aligns with a long-standing tech industry trend of assigning friendly faces to products. While Jollybot serves as the public face of Muse, the AI itself can take on different forms internally, reflecting the product's flexibility and adaptability.
