Meta postpones plan to lease AI computing power to Anthropic
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal published on October 9, Meta has postponed its plan to lease AI computing power to Anthropic. The report states that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had previously contacted Meta's Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, to request access to Meta's AI chips. Meta internally discussed the proposal but ultimately decided not to proceed.
With the gradual release of its Muse series of self-developed models, Meta's AI business has rebounded from an earlier downturn, leading to a surge in its own demand for computing power. At this stage, leasing computational resources to a competitor is seen as a 'self-destructive' move.
The report also highlights how the allocation of computing resources is influencing AI talent decisions. Transformer architecture co-author Noam Shazeer left Google again due to insufficient computing power. Additionally, many promised investments in computing infrastructure have failed to materialize, limiting the growth of the AI industry.
