On October 15, Meta released the open-weight AI model Muse Spark Open, claiming it is the most capable U.S. open-weight model to date. The company stated that Muse Spark Open's performance is lower than the recently unveiled Muse Wonder, which was announced earlier in the week but remains closed-source. Meta's Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, explained that the company typically does not open-source its most advanced models due to safety and capability concerns. However, he emphasized that Meta intends to continue releasing high-quality open models. This marks the second time Meta has open-sourced a Muse model, following the release of Glimmer, a 300 billion parameter model, in August under the Apache 2.0 license. Earlier, Meta's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, had criticized the lack of openness in competitors' models, calling it a dangerous practice.
