Meta's Zuckerberg advocates for independent assessments over slowing AI development

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has argued that ensuring AI safety should rely on independent external evaluations rather than slowing down AI development. In a post on X, he emphasized that users would not accept AI systems that do not align with their values or fail to follow instructions. He stated that AI labs have a strong incentive to improve their models' alignment with human values and real-world facts. Zuckerberg noted that Meta delayed the release of Muse to ensure its safety and security, integrating safety measures into its regular development process. He highlighted that independent assessments are a best practice in the industry, with Meta's MSL already implementing this approach across multiple areas. Other labs can follow suit to build a more diverse and robust evaluation ecosystem. Zuckerberg also suggested that focusing on serving the public rather than recursive self-improvement is a safer path for AI development.
