Microsoft emphasizes human oversight in AI development
Microsoft's AI chief, Mustafa Suleyman, has called for a clear boundary in the development of advanced AI, insisting that it must remain under human control. This stance positions Microsoft differently from its competitors, as concerns grow over the potential risks of current AI trajectories.
The company recently released a 'Humanist AI' code of conduct, emphasizing the need for humans to maintain meaningful control over AI systems. Suleyman's vision of 'humanist superintelligence' was outlined last year, but Microsoft is not yet implementing this approach.
The company faces a competitive challenge as it aims to develop models that can match or exceed industry leaders, yet its new philosophy suggests it may need to deliberately slow down or accept less capable systems to prioritize human oversight.
Suleyman also argues that AI should enhance human independence rather than create dependency, marking a distinct position in ongoing debates about AI's ethical implications.
