Microsoft enhances copilot notebooks with task automation and document editing capabilities
Microsoft has expanded the capabilities of Copilot Notebooks by introducing features such as task delegation, in-place editing of Office documents, and interactive reports. These updates, announced in October 2026, are being rolled out through the Frontier Preview Program. Users can now delegate tasks and set up automated processes like daily briefings and weekly status reports, reducing manual effort for project managers. The update also allows direct editing of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files within notebooks, eliminating the need to switch to separate Office applications. Additionally, the interactive report feature includes visual charts and filters for data analysis. Microsoft has also enhanced audio summaries by adding support for Teams conversations and Outlook emails, along with new modes for commenting and debating notebook content.
The company aims to position Copilot Notebooks as a smart workspace for executing tasks, extending beyond its previous role as an AI information organization tool. This move strengthens integration with the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, contrasting with Gemini Notebook's focus on information retrieval. Copilot can now recommend documents and presentations based on existing materials, offering users choices between models from OpenAI and Anthropic.
