Microsoft introduces project opal to enhance AI task automation in Microsoft 365
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced Project Opal, a new AI feature for Microsoft 365 Copilot, on September 7. The tool enables users to plan and execute complex, long-term tasks using AI agents in a secure and traceable environment. Project Opal allows AI to work continuously for hours or days, automating processes such as finding materials, creating tables, generating PPTs, and sending them to colleagues.
In a demonstrated use case, the AI analyzed a month of outdoor camera footage, identifying animal scenes, extracting clips, and compiling data into spreadsheets, presentations, and videos for Teams. Users can access the Frontier module in Microsoft 365 Copilot, input task requirements, and initiate the process, which generates an execution plan and launches a dedicated Windows 365 Cloud PC. Microsoft highlighted early applications in compliance audits, onboarding, and timesheets, with engineers reporting up to 20 hours weekly saved in audit scenarios.
