Microsoft introduces project quine: a biology-focused AI tool for cancer research

On September 29, Microsoft Research unveiled Project Quine, an experimental multimodal AI system designed for biological research. Developed in partnership with Harvard University and the Broad Institute, the tool integrates genomics, proteins, chemistry, cell states, and biological imaging into a unified framework, enabling cross-model analysis. Microsoft has launched the Quine Fellows program to allow researchers immediate access, with future expansion through products like Microsoft Discovery. Project Quine addresses traditional drug development challenges by pre-screening candidate molecules and prioritizing high-potential targets. In a recent test on pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma cell lines, it identified compounds capable of altering cell states within a single weekend, potentially saving years of research time and millions in costs. Microsoft emphasized that the system is strictly for research use and requires manual review of all outputs due to the risk of AI errors.
