Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced Project Opal, a new AI feature for Microsoft 365 Copilot, on September 7, 2026, via X. The tool enables users to delegate complex, long-term tasks to an AI agent operating within a secure, traceable environment. It can handle workflows such as gathering data, creating tables, generating PowerPoint presentations, and sharing results with colleagues. In a demonstration, Opal analyzed a month’s worth of outdoor camera footage, identifying animal appearances, extracting quality clips, and compiling them into a video. It also tagged each record with camera details, dates, and species labels, then organized the data into spreadsheets and generated a PowerPoint summary. The system automatically shares the results in Teams for team review. Project Opal is set to launch in Microsoft 365 Copilot’s Frontier module, with early applications including compliance audits, onboarding, and time tracking. Microsoft claims engineers can save up to 20 hours weekly on audit tasks using the tool.
