Microsoft's aion system unveiled: ai-powered os without start menu
A new AI-driven operating system, Project Aion, developed by Microsoft, has been revealed through leaks from the BetaWiki Discord channel. The system is designed for enterprise users and is positioned as an AI-centric platform without a traditional start menu.
Aion is built around Microsoft's Copilot AI and is intended to run on a variety of AI-specific devices, including those running AOSP, Windows 3, and Windows 11. The system is based on Microsoft Edge and a lightweight version of the Windows codebase, with no conventional desktop icons, taskbar, or start menu.
Instead, users interact with the system through a Copilot button, which greets them with a personalized message and displays three main cards: 'Stay on Top', 'Create something new', and 'News of the day'.
The 'My Stuff' section provides access to key Microsoft applications such as Edge, Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, Microsoft 365, Figma, and Visual Studio Code. Users can input queries into the 'Ask me anything' field, and the system offers auto-complete suggestions, such as recommending TechCrunch when typing 'techc'.
The system can open applications in Edge's picture-in-picture mode or as floating windows, and each conversation is treated as an independent app with its own icon. Spaces, a feature for organizing tasks, allows users to create targeted environments, such as 'TURKEY TRIP', with associated tools and a 'one-click itinerary draft' function.
Aion can also search SharePoint and emails, and it integrates with Microsoft 365 to provide contextual intelligence through the Context IQ feature. When drafting emails, the system generates content in various tones, including Casual, Professional, Funny, and Undead Pirate Captain, without requiring users to open Outlook.
The system also links to external services like WhatsApp, YouTube, Word, Turkish Airlines, Expedia, and Airbnb, enhancing its functionality for both work and travel planning.
