Microsoft's revenue from OpenAI surpasses $10 billion
Microsoft reported $10 billion in revenue from commercial agreements with OpenAI during the quarter ended September 30, 2026, according to a regulatory filing. This accounts for nearly 11% of Microsoft’s total quarterly revenue of $92.3 billion. For the full 2026 fiscal year, revenue from OpenAI reached $24.1 billion, with projections suggesting $40 billion in annual revenue if the current pace continues. Microsoft also noted $7.2 billion in outstanding receivables from OpenAI at the end of September, up from $6 billion in June.
Microsoft and OpenAI have a complex financial relationship, with OpenAI reportedly sharing 20% of its revenue with Microsoft as part of a previous deal. The companies began loosening their exclusive partnership in October 2025, when Microsoft relinquished its control over OpenAI in exchange for a commitment to purchase $250 billion in Azure services. Microsoft’s ownership stake in OpenAI has declined slightly from 25% in June to 24% in September, continuing a gradual reduction from around 27% following the October 2025 recapitalization.
