Mistral AI unveils open-source large 4 model with 1t parameters

Mistral AI, a French artificial intelligence company, has released the weights of its Mistral Large 4 (ML4) model, known as 'le Chonk,' under an open-source license. The model features 1 trillion total parameters and 490 billion activation parameters, with an additional 30 billion for embeddings and outputs. It was trained using 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's European data centers. The release follows performance improvements and optimizations based on real-world testing with government and enterprise users. The model scores 48% on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, matching GLM-5.3, while reducing token usage by 47% per task. Pricing includes $0.70 per million input tokens, $0.07 for caching, and $2.10 for output tokens. The model is available under a modified MIT license, allowing free use for personal, academic, and commercial purposes, with additional permissions required for cloud resellers. The model is hosted on Hugging Face.
