Moonshot's kimi K2.8 preview launches full code model with enhanced performance

On September 11, 2026, Moonshot announced the full release of its Kimi K2.8 Preview model, integrating Kimi Code with the same Model ID, kimi-for-coding. Users of the client and third-party tools do not need to adjust their configurations to access the new version. According to Moonshot, the K2.8 Preview model demonstrates performance close to K3, with improved thinking efficiency. The model also features enhanced coding and agent capabilities, with significant improvements in thinking efficiency compared to K2.7 Code. All membership tiers now offer a maximum 1M context window. The K2.8 Preview supports thinking effort adjustment, matching the thinking levels of K3. It offers low, high, and max settings, with max as the default. When thinking is disabled, requests for both K3 series and K2.8 Preview are directed to the K2.8 Preview without thinking.
