Moore Threads has released the 'MTT S5000 Prefill-as-a-Service' technical white paper, introducing a new paradigm for AI inference by leveraging its flagship AI training and inference integrated smart computing card, the MTT S5000. The initiative targets long-context inference scenarios such as AI agents, code generation, and ultra-long document analysis, offering a practical solution that balances inference efficiency, cost control, and compute utilization. According to Moore Threads, as large models' input context sizes rapidly increase to hundreds of thousands to one million tokens, the computational and latency demands of long-text inputs are becoming a critical bottleneck for enterprise inference services. Traditional homogeneous cluster setups are no longer sufficient to meet the varying hardware resource needs across different computation stages. The core issue lies in structural misalignment: during large model online inference, the prefill phase is compute-intensive and constrained by floating-point capabilities, while the decode phase is memory bandwidth-intensive. Running both processes on the same physical resource pool leads to inefficiencies, with either memory underutilization or compute units idling. The white paper highlights that overcoming this challenge requires decoupling prefill and decode, allowing each to operate on hardware optimized for its specific computational characteristics. By implementing hardware layering, Moore Threads shifts from a generic over-provisioning model to a demand-driven approach, enabling cost-effective infrastructure for token processing while maintaining service level objectives (SLOs).
