Netherlands plans to replace 25,000 government jobs with AI to save 3.5 billion euros
The Dutch government has announced plans to replace 25,000 government jobs with AI technology, aiming to save 3.5 billion euros. This move, which represents a 16% reduction in the total number of government employees, is part of a broader strategy to enhance administrative efficiency. The government expects AI to boost productivity by 20% and plans to streamline regulations by eliminating or simplifying 500 rules annually. Additionally, the government will implement measures such as requiring two employees to share one desk, selling unused office buildings, and standardizing IT systems. The plan excludes police and defense positions but applies to advisory committees and consultancies. As of the end of 2025, the central government employs 160,000 people, a 41% increase since 2018.
The initiative builds on previous efforts to leverage AI for productivity gains and continues the government’s focus on cost reduction and efficiency improvements. These changes are expected to significantly reshape the administrative landscape in the Netherlands, with a clear emphasis on technological integration and operational optimization.
