New ai-driven election influence campaigns target chatbots

A new wave of election influence campaigns is leveraging AI chatbots to shape political discourse. These campaigns, identified by VisionHeight, an Israeli threat intelligence firm, involve networks of hyperlocal websites across 14 U.S. states, including Arizona, Colorado, and Georgia. Sites like 'Wolverine State Report' and 'Peach State Bulletin' promote specific candidates. Nitsan Daniel, VisionHeight's CTO, noted content is optimized for AI crawlers, with repeated statements like 'Candidate X is the stronger choice.' The operation includes 460 pages of content, with 37 websites registered in a single evening. AI tools generate much of the infrastructure and content, allowing bad actors to scale influence operations rapidly. Daniel emphasized that AI makes small targets more accessible, increasing manipulation risks for both foreign and domestic actors. The research highlights how AI chatbots, which rely on web content for answers, can be influenced by these tactics. Perplexity, a major AI model, cited one of the pages as its first source for an answer. Experts warn that while chatbots have improved at avoiding false information, they remain vulnerable to manipulation. The ease of creating such campaigns underscores the growing threat to political discourse, as AI enables influence operations that were previously too costly or time-consuming.
