New AI toothbrush aims to detect dental issues before visits
usmile, an oral-care technology company, has launched the D Series, an at-home AI-assisted toothbrush system. The system includes the D50 OralCam Toothbrush and the D-lite OralCam, which uses a smartphone camera for a comprehensive visual review. The D5,000 features a screen on its handle for real-time feedback, differing from earlier smart toothbrushes that relied on app-based information. Jason Zhang, product director at usmile, emphasized that the D Series represents a turning point in oral care, enabling users to detect potential issues at home and bridge the gap between consumers and dental professionals. The system tracks hygiene, alerts users to problem areas, and aims to make daily care more actionable. Smart toothbrushes first appeared in the early 2010s, but the D Series introduces new capabilities through its integrated screen and visual feedback system.
The D-lite OralCam complements the D50 by offering a fuller visual review of the mouth, enhancing users' ability to monitor their dental health between professional visits. Zhang highlighted that many consumers assume their teeth are clean until they face unexpected issues at the dentist. The D Series is positioned as a new visual care system that promotes prevention and improves communication between users and dental professionals. This innovation reflects a growing trend in at-home health monitoring, leveraging AI to provide proactive dental care solutions.
