A national initiative, the Grid Protectors Program, has been launched to ensure that future compute campuses can provide reliable and affordable electricity support to local communities. This effort involves collaborating with utilities, regulators, and policymakers to establish arrangements where these facilities can reduce electricity consumption when the power grid faces stress. As U.S. data center capacity is projected to surpass 100 gigawatts by 2030, the program seeks to leverage campus flexibility to strengthen the electric grid. The initial pilot is in Georgia, where the company has committed to covering all infrastructure and electric-service costs for its Effingham County campus. This agreement with Georgia Power includes a commitment of up to 1,000 megawatts of flexible demand response. This flexibility allows the facilities to help preserve power for other customers, such as supporting approximately 700,000 households during extreme heat. Furthermore, the Georgia agreement is part of a broader utility plan that projects annual customer savings of around $950 million starting in 2029. The company maintains that while this flexibility is valuable, it does not replace the need for new energy supply and transmission investments.
