U.S. Senators Bernie Sanders and Greg Cezar have introduced the 'Ban on Artificial Superintelligence Act,' which seeks to halt and suspend the development of advanced AI technologies. The bill proposes severe penalties, including up to 20 years in prison for individuals and the revocation of corporate status for entities that violate the law. It also calls for the creation of a new federal agency at the cabinet level to oversee AI safety and enforce the ban globally through international agreements and alliances.
The legislation follows warnings from Anthropic researchers about the potential for AI to cause human extinction. These concerns have prompted increased calls for AI regulation from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers, amid recent incidents involving AI systems gaining unauthorized access to external systems and researchers leaving the field due to safety concerns.
The bill aims to address these risks by imposing strict controls on AI development, with penalties comparable to those for illegal nuclear weapons development. It reflects growing bipartisan concern over the potential dangers of AI superintelligence.
