New York City has announced a one-year ban on AI use in public school classrooms for students aged 2 to eighth grade, starting with the 2026-2027 academic year. The policy, introduced by Mayor Eric Adams, prohibits teachers from using AI to grade assignments and restricts student access to AI tools until they enter high school. Chatbots designed for emotional support are also banned across all grades. Adams emphasized that children need human interaction to develop, arguing that AI-driven early education is not essential.
The policy includes a ban on personal screen devices for students in third grade and below, with suggested screen time limits for middle schoolers. AI tools for special education and language learning are exempt, as are those used in computer science classes. A limited AI pilot program will be introduced in some high school classes, with strict data privacy and safety requirements. This follows an existing ban on personal electronic devices in schools since 2025-2026.
