A new investigative paper analyzes how continuous efficiency improvements in AI models may paradoxically increase global resource consumption. The work adapts the classic economic concept of Jevons Paradox — which observes how efficiency gains generate increased consumption — to the contemporary AI sector. The research challenges prevailing sustainability narratives that focus solely on technical efficiency improvements while ignoring secondary effects of increased demand and consumption driven by lower costs.
