AI Agent Orchid Draws Criticism for Automating Relationship Problem-Solving

Orchid, a newly promoted AI assistant, gained attention this week as a proposed solution for relationship difficulties by automating tasks for inattentive partners. A viral promotional video showed a boyfriend who forgot his girlfriend's anniversary turning to the AI to book reservations and purchase flowers, with both partners consulting the system but allowing him to take credit for the arrangements. Social media users criticized the campaign for normalizing dependency and shirking personal accountability. According to marriage and family therapist Lauren Maher in Los Angeles, delegating relationship maintenance prevents direct communication between partners. Using AI as an intermediary constitutes triangulation—indirect communication through a third party—a practice consistently discouraged in couples therapy. Rather than addressing underlying issues, such workarounds typically conceal problems that resurface with greater intensity. A survey of over 13,000 participants across multiple continents found that AI relationship advice frequently creates confusion rather than clarity. Fifty-nine percent reported increased uncertainty after receiving such guidance, and 47% postponed significant relationship decisions influenced by AI suggestions. While positioned as a lifestyle automation solution, Orchid's actual impact on resolving fundamental relational challenges remains questionable.
