AI chatbots show mixed results handling 2026 US election information
A nonprofit research organization tested ChatGPT and Google's AI interface ability to answer basic US election questions across six swing states. While error rates dropped from 6.9-8.2% in 2025 to zero in 2026 in follow-up tests, the tools remained unreliable in other ways. ChatGPT provided incomplete candidate lists 88.9% of the time, and both systems linked to official state election websites less than 40% of the time. Researchers caution that voters should not rely on AI chatbots as primary sources for election information, despite improvements in factual accuracy.
