AI Expands Software Developer Workforce Instead of Replacing It
Contrary to initial concerns that AI would eliminate technology jobs, evidence suggests the opposite is occurring. Atlassian's stock jumped 35 percent following reports of surging revenue driven by increased user growth in Jira and Confluence platforms. CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes stated there will be more developers globally in five years than today, with developer hiring continuing to grow. AI reduces the cost of building technology while increasing the volume of technology built. User growth data reveals approximately two-thirds of Jira and Confluence users work in roles such as human resources, finance, and legal, rather than traditional development. This indicates AI is expanding who can build software, creating a larger pool of technology builders not necessarily categorized as software developers. The previously feared collapse of the software job market and subscription decline may not materialize, potentially replaced by an expanded market for tools serving a much larger workforce.
