AI Lab Employees Sign Open Letter Demanding Pace Control Mechanisms

Over 1,200 employees from frontier AI labs have signed an open letter urging the U.S. government to develop tools and governance structures to deliberately pace the advancement of artificial intelligence development. OpenAI and Anthropic have formally endorsed the initiative, with senior leadership from both organizations among the signatories. The letter emphasizes that while AI holds potential for transformative progress, accelerating capability development risks outpacing humanity's ability to understand and manage resulting systems. Rather than calling for an immediate halt, signatories argue for establishing coordination mechanisms now as a precaution, should deliberate intervention become necessary in the future. Anthropic accounts for nearly half of the collected signatures, with substantial participation from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, and other organizations. The broad backing from senior executives across frontier labs demonstrates support for enhanced transparency, improved safety protocols, and frameworks enabling coordinated decision-making on development pacing.
