Artificial intelligence voice systems have begun operating at roughly six percent of US fast food locations, automating the order-taking process historically performed by human employees. Taco Bell currently operates AI at over 890 drive-thru lanes, representing more than ten percent of its US locations, while Dairy Queen is expanding across 25 states with plans for nationwide rollout. White Castle's "Julia" AI system operates at twelve percent of locations, with all newly opened stores launching directly with voice AI. McDonald's catalyzed the trend in 2019 through its acquisition of startup Apprete, establishing McD Tech Labs to develop the technology. Competitors including Panda Express, Del Taco, and others partnered with vendors like Presto, SoundHound, Nvidia, and Omilia to deploy similar systems. Industry vendors project rapid scaling, claiming AI delivers faster processing and superior upselling compared to humans. However, viral social media posts documented significant failures—instances of the system adding hundreds of unordered items, substituting incompatible ingredients, and misinterpreting customer requests—generating public skepticism about readiness.
