Anthropic debuts Cowork, an AI agent that automates file-based tasks without coding

Anthropic unveiled Cowork, a new AI agent capability that brings the functionality of Claude Code beyond developers to general users. Launched as a research preview exclusively for Claude Max subscribers ($100-$200 monthly), the tool operates through the macOS desktop application. Unlike Claude Code, which targets programmers, Cowork enables any user to delegate tasks such as folder reorganization, expense processing, report generation, and document compilation. The system operates within an isolated sandbox where the AI agent can read, modify, or create files within a user-designated folder. Cowork emerged from an unexpected observation: users were repurposing Claude Code for non-programming tasks since its late 2024 release. Recognizing this pattern, Anthropic stripped away the command-line interface to create a more accessible product. The development timeline was notably rapid—approximately a week and a half—with portions reportedly completed using Claude Code itself, raising questions about the recursive nature of AI tool development. The agent integrates with Anthropic's existing connector ecosystem, supporting services such as Asana, Notion, and PayPal, and pairs with Claude's Chrome extension for web-dependent tasks. Anthropic openly acknowledged inherent security risks, including accidental file deletion and prompt injection vulnerabilities, positioning these as current limitations of agent technology rather than isolated to Cowork. The launch positions Anthropic in direct competition with Microsoft's Copilot in the expanding AI productivity tools market. Currently limited to macOS Max subscribers, Anthropic has announced future plans for Windows support and cross-device synchronization.
