Anthropic Watermarks AI-Generated Text to Comply with EU Regulations

Anthropic announced it will watermark text generated by Claude and its other models to comply with the EU AI Act's Transparency Code, which took effect on August 2, 2026. All models released after this date will automatically watermark computer-generated text and files, with the watermark persisting even when text is copied and pasted. The company plans to extend watermarking support to older models as well, applying the technique across all Claude products including the API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and Claude Tag. The move comes as multiple AI companies rush to implement watermarking following regulatory pressure and backlash from users concerned about AI-generated content.
