Autonomous Key: The $9 physical lock against smartphone distractions

Autonomous Key is a new NFC-enabled device designed to combat excessive app usage through a physical barrier rather than digital willpower. Unlike traditional screen-time management apps that rely on notifications users can easily dismiss, this product forces users to physically access an NFC key to unlock their locked applications, with each unlock session lasting up to 60 minutes before automatic re-locking occurs. The $9 price point undercuts major competitors significantly—Brick costs $59, Blok $29, and Unpluq $26.50—while providing core blocking functionality. The accompanying app supports multiple devices paired to a single key and includes AI-powered behavior insights that analyze usage patterns with a deliberately sarcastic tone. Currently in beta following a Kickstarter campaign and recently begun shipping, Autonomous Key is available in five colors and requires Android 8.0 or later and iOS 15 or later. The product includes no subscription fees or premium tiers.
