Brad Lightcap, longtime OpenAI executive, leaves to start something new

Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI's longest-serving executives, announced that he is leaving the AI company to start a new venture. Lightcap, who joined OpenAI in 2018, served as chief financial officer for four years before ascending to chief operating officer in 2022, a position he held until this year. Recently, he was moved to lead special projects at the company. Before OpenAI, Lightcap also worked with CEO Sam Altman at venture capital firm Y Combinator. In his message to staff, Lightcap expressed that in recent months he has been focused on the next horizon and what might impede mission success. He suggested there are several important new things the world will need to get right as it enters this new period, but provided few details about his future plans.
