ChatGPT for Linux enters public preview with support for popular distributions
OpenAI has released a Linux version of ChatGPT in public preview. The application is available for Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora on x64 and ARM64 architectures, with installation packages in deb and rpm formats. Although announced on August 14, the application does not yet appear on ChatGPT's official downloads page and is only accessible through OpenAI's technical documentation.
The installation files are quite large: the deb version for x64 occupies approximately 374MB, while the rpm version reaches 420MB. During installation, an OpenAI-signed software repository is added to the system, allowing future updates to be managed through the apt and dnf package managers.
Currently, the application runs with the XWayland window system, but users can configure it to use native Wayland through command-line parameters. The Computer Use feature, which allows ChatGPT to interact with the user's computer, is not yet available in the Linux version and remains limited to browser-based operations.
