Choosing the Right AI in the Age of Autonomous Agents
Artificial intelligence usage has undergone radical transformation. Until recently, using AI meant simply conversing with a chatbot in back-and-forth exchanges. Today, it has become practical to deploy AI as autonomous agents, entrusting them with tasks they complete independently using appropriate tools.
To choose which AI to use, understanding three components is essential: models (the underlying intelligence), applications (the concrete products), and harnesses (systems enabling AI to execute tools and multi-step tasks). The leading frontier models are GPT-5.2 (OpenAI), Claude Opus 4.6 (Anthropic), and Gemini 3 Pro (Google), distinguishing themselves primarily in reasoning, writing, coding, and analytical capabilities.
For serious work, at least $20 monthly investment is required to access advanced models. Free versions, though fast, are optimized for chat rather than accuracy, making them significantly less capable. Correct model selection is critical, as "automatic" mode frequently chooses weaker variants. Common web applications (chatgpt.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com) offer different features—ChatGPT and Gemini include image and video creation tools and deep research, while Claude provides research as an integrated option.
Yet the true differentiator is advanced harnesses. Claude Code and OpenAI Codex grant AI access to virtual computers, code terminals, and browsers, enabling autonomous research, development, and testing of complete projects. Google Gemini remains less capable in this context, despite comparable model quality. The conclusion is clear: harness sophistication—rather than model quality alone—increasingly determines which AI suits each specific task.
