Creator Hank Green addresses unhealthy reliance on AI chatbots
Hank Green, a YouTuber with 3.2 million subscribers, publicly acknowledged his problematic dependence on AI chatbots, particularly ChatGPT. The issue came to light when an awkward phrase appearing to be generated by an AI model ended up in one of his educational videos on the Complexly channel, raising viewer concerns about content authenticity.
Green disclosed that he had relied on ChatGPT for research while producing video scripts under significant time pressure. While maintaining that his core ideas and words remained his own, he accepted criticism that this approach had diluted his creative voice and personal touch.
In response, Green announced he would reduce his output and posting frequency to regain control of his creative process. He outlined concerns about AI's environmental footprint and corporate consolidation, but emphasized that his primary fear is losing connection with his audience. Green characterized his interaction with language models as unhealthy and acknowledged it disconnected him from where his viewers actually are, committing to more intentional and authentic content creation going forward.
