Friend, the AI wearable created by tech entrepreneur Avi Schiffmann two years ago, undergoes a significant transformation with the launch of version 2.0. Originally positioned as a solution to combat loneliness through text messages about users' daily activities, the device now features an integrated speaker that enables voice conversations with a unique and consistent personality.
The upgrade brings a substantial price increase: from $99 at the original launch to $249 for the new version. According to Schiffmann, Friend is not intended as an assistant or romantic companion, but rather as a confidant, friend, or even something divine — an ambitious positioning for an algorithm-based necklace.
The product had already stirred public controversy, particularly through a billboard campaign in New York City's subway system that went viral after being repeatedly vandalized, signaling public resistance to the idea of replacing human connection with a digital device.
AI wearables in general have failed to achieve mass adoption thus far. A notable example is Humane Inc., which attempted to revolutionize the market with its AI Pin as an iPhone replacement but shut down operations in less than a year due to poor sales.
