Google DeepMind has developed WeatherNext, an AI model that forecasts cyclones with unprecedented accuracy. According to research published in Nature, the model provides meteorologists an extra day of warning compared to existing systems. This means its three-day forecasts match the accuracy of traditional models' two-day predictions. The breakthrough is exemplified by WeatherNext's prediction of Hurricane Melissa: five days before impact, the model achieved 80% confidence that the system would hit Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane, providing crucial early warning time for affected communities.
