Google has withdrawn a feature introduced within Google Earth that enabled users to manipulate satellite photographs using artificial intelligence and text prompts. The technology granted the general public the ability to generate AI-created deepfakes of real-world locations. Users demonstrated potential risks by producing fabricated imagery depicting vulnerable scenarios, such as migrant populations at borders and bombing sites adjacent to hospitals. The company initially highlighted digital watermarks and content moderation systems designed to prevent harmful generation. However, the technology was removed entirely within one day, suggesting Google recognized the significant ethical concerns and security risks posed by the tool.
