Google abruptly reversed its decision to introduce an artificial intelligence feature into Google Earth. The functionality had permitted users to synthesize computer-generated imagery and layer such content across the application's actual geographic data, ostensibly to encourage creative engagement with the platform. Journalists and researchers quickly raised alarms about the capability's potential to facilitate the creation and dissemination of false content. Given that Google Earth serves as a trusted source of visual documentation for academics and media professionals, the ability to embed artificially produced images into maps posed considerable risks for geospatial disinformation. Within one day of its launch, Google removed the feature entirely. The company acknowledged receiving evidence that users had already distributed screenshots of generated images that breached its content policies. It indicated that more robust protective measures would need to be implemented before reintroducing the tool.
