Google's AI model predicts hurricanes with unprecedented precision
An artificial intelligence model developed by Google DeepMind and Google Research, called WeatherNext, demonstrated the ability to predict cyclones with unprecedented precision. The research, published in the journal Nature, shows the model provides meteorologists with an extra day of lead time compared to traditional models — its three-day forecasts match the accuracy of existing systems' two-day predictions. For Hurricane Melissa in October 2025, the model predicted with 80% confidence five days before landfall that the system would hit Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane, giving communities crucial time to prepare.
