AI image generator in Google Earth raises misinformation concerns
Google deployed a feature called Nano Banana powered by artificial intelligence that enabled the generation of images using satellite and aerial imagery from Google Earth. The tool demonstrated significant risks for creating fabricated visual content, as demonstrated by researcher Henk van Ess, who synthesized false imagery depicting refugee situations at the Mexico border and bomb craters adjacent to Gaza hospitals.
Concerns about potential misinformation led Google to withdraw the feature from its platform. The company implemented protective measures including SynthID, a digital watermark embedded in all AI-generated images created through the system. According to the company's statement, users could verify image authenticity by using the Gemini application or the Lens tool within its search engine.
