India's mobile app market is entering a period of significant monetization growth. During the second quarter of 2026, Indian consumers spent 345 million dollars on applications, marking a 35% year-over-year increase. The market's expansion is now outpacing other major regions as India transitions from being known primarily for its download volume to emerging as one of the world's fastest-growing app revenue markets.
The spending surge reflects changing consumer behaviors and growing adoption of premium digital services. Generative AI, streaming, and productivity applications now dominate revenue, reversing the historical reliance on gaming. Non-gaming categories account for 68% of total app revenue, compared to 58% three years ago. Digital payment infrastructure, particularly the Unified Payments Interface and digital wallets, has significantly reduced friction in app purchases and subscriptions.
Global subscription platforms are among the primary beneficiaries of this trend. ChatGPT and Claude together generate 83% of India's AI app revenue, while Google One emerged as the country's highest-grossing application during the quarter. Streaming services including Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll continue to experience growth.
While India's expansion is impressive, the market remains far behind mature regions in revenue per download. The United States generates 4.60 dollars per download, Japan 6.10 dollars, compared to India's fraction of that figure. Nevertheless, the trajectory matters most — with revenue per download doubling over three and a half years, the market demonstrates substantial room for long-term growth.
