Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist, is leaving the tech giant to start Discovery Loop alongside three colleagues: Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals. The new public benefit corporation aims to automate machine learning and scientific research by running thousands of experiments in parallel to solve complex problems in science and engineering. The startup has secured funding from Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures in its initial round, with participation from Lightspeed, Kleiner Perkins, and Doerr Capital. Alphabet, Google's parent company, is acting as a founding investor and cloud partner. Dean's 27-year tenure at Google included pivotal work on search, translation, advertising, and the development of the Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) that accelerated AI research.
