Representative Ro Khanna introduced a resolution that would grant local communities specific rights to reject artificial intelligence data center construction. The proposal includes the ability to reject data centers through transparent community processes, prohibit construction within 2,500 feet of residences or sensitive facilities, maintain electricity price stability, and protect water resources. The initiative emerges from a wave of political opposition to data centers, viewed as threats to cost of living and natural resources amid the AI boom. Several states, including New York, have already implemented moratoriums, and candidates supporting restrictions won recent elections.
