Major US ports deploy AI to optimize cargo logistics and safety
Major U.S. seaports are increasingly implementing artificial intelligence to streamline complex supply chain operations. The Port of New Orleans partnered with New Orleans Public Belt Railroad and logistics company UTC Transoceanic in May to deploy AI for planning oversized cargo movements. The system uses digital twins and predictive modeling to determine safe routes for cargo, taking into account real-time data such as track temperature fluctuations that affect rail dimensions. This approach accelerates decision-making and provides certainty in route planning—previously, workers relied on static drawings and manual data entry in spreadsheets. Other ports are following suit with their own AI initiatives: the Port of Corpus Christi deployed AI and digital twins for vessel tracking, the Port of Los Angeles enhanced its truck appointment system with AI, and Georgia Ports Authority rolled out AI-based facial recognition for truck drivers at terminal gates.
